the sivananda yoga centre, gurgaon was set up on 1 April 2004. the centre is affiliated to the sivananda yoga vedanta centres and ashrams worldwide, headquartered in canada. its main purpose is to spread the teaching and practice of an authentic and ancient system of yoga, thereby promoting health, well being, a stress-free lifestyle and more balanced and visionary individual.

since its inception, the centre has taught over 15000 yoga classes at the centre, and another 15000 classes involving individuals, groups and organizations, outside the centre.

currently, the centre receives over 600 people every week in 30 open classes. the centre offers regular open yoga classes, meditation, advanced
classes, workshops and seminars, and yoga classes for children and teenagers. the centre has also taught or continues to teach classes in various organizations. some of these include dupont, ranbaxy, evalueserve, hero honda, sapient, american express, star tv and the british high commission.

all the teachers at the centre have taken an international residential teachers’ training course at the ashrams in trivandrum, madurai or uttarkashi. these and other courses and workshops were created by swami vishnudevananda, who spread the yoga movement in the united states, canada, europe and india in the last 50 years. each teacher goes through the same rigorous gurukula system of training – learning by repetitive practice under the supervision of senior, more experienced teachers. they learn to have sensitivity, respect and a deep understanding of the human condition.

the sivananda class and yoga system is one of the most popular forms of yoga in the world today, easy to begin and to understand and to practice.

the teacher body

the sivananda yoga centre, gurgaon has a teacher body of over 20 active teachers. each of them has completed his or her international teachers’ training course offered by the sivananda yoga vedanta centres and is certified to teach yoga anywhere in the world. this teacher body, growing and maturing as each day goes by, is one of the largest pools of qualified yoga teachers of the sivananda system in the world, practicing and teaching together at one centre and in one city.

all the teachers at the centre offer their time and teaching on a voluntary basis, making their work an act of seva, selfless service. the students therefore get a teacher who is not only highly trained and knowledgeable about yoga, but also one who is compassionate, gentle, caring and giving, without any inclination towards external reward. some of the teachers have also completed their advanced teachers’ training and the 15 day sadhana intensive (please see www.sivananda.org for more details). each teacher leads by example, and it is a profound learning experience, just to be in their presence. sivananda teachers in gurgaon teach on an average between 100 and 500 classes in a year.
