this week’s asana is one of the pillars of the sivananda class

savasana (corpse pose, or relaxation)

this is one of the simplest asanas to practice, and yet is one of the most difficult to master.

constant activity, stress of modern day living, poor daily habits and lack of proper rest. this is the description of the life of a city dweller.

savasana provides great relief from this continuous attack on our senses and sensibilities.

lie down quietly in an undisturbed room with good ventilation and air conditioning.

withdraw yourself from your daily cares and concerns.

breathe consciously for a few minutes and let your breathing become gentle and rythmical.

mentally scan your body part by part.

suggest each part to relax, not just externally, but also from deep within.

withdraw your senses.

calm down your feelings.

finally calm down your conscious and unconscious mind.

be still for ten to twelve minutes in all.

the daily practice of savasana will bring about profound physical, mental and emotional changes. it will make you more adjusting, cooperative, relaxed and peaceful. concentration and memory will improve. savasana reduces blood pressure and provides an antidote to many lifestyle diseases be it migraine, or sleeplessness, obesity, heart disease or chronic acidity.

practice for three months morning and evening every day without a break, and see the results for yourself.

as swami sivananda explains, an ounce of practice is worth tons of theory.
